发现新世界之前，必须先结束旧世界。在欧洲构思、到了美国才完稿的《经济人的终结》这本书，乃是从一个原始存在注意者的角度，去探寻法西斯注意的精神与社会层面的根源。用更贴切的话来说，《经济人的终结》是描述人们对资本主义信仰的危机，因为该注意的基础一直有缺陷，需要加以改良。跳过从德国或意大利起源的过程，德鲁克将探寻的重点放在“法西斯注意为何从其文明产生”上面。事实上，我们就生存在那个文明中。

年岁渐长后，德鲁克从威廉·詹姆斯的理论学到更多知识，变得更加成熟。他开始强调，“效果”才是测试新观念最准确的标准，而且是惟一的标准。
